Network Kansas

Project: Networked Partnership for Community Investment and the Networked for Change Conference

Challenge

Translate CEO's desire to create a "network of networks" to collaborate across geographies and industries to boldly transform communities across Kansas.

  • CML Collective created the annual Networked for Change Conference, an in-person statewide two-day experience launched; averaging more than 200 participants and 40 presenters

Union Pacific & Etched Communication

Project: 29th and Grove Clean Up Project

Challenge

Improve communication related to a multi-year chemical spill clean-up impacting central-northeast Wichita. After decades of incomplete and inconsistent communication with area residents, a communication gap existed causing signficant divides between impacted residents, the state, county and city government and Union Pacific, tasked with cleaning up the spill.

Solution

CML Collective:

  • Worked with project team members to ensure communication to residents included plain language, at more regular intervals and through more varied methods including: public meetings, direct mail, door-to-door canvassing, paid media, neighborhood signage, website and social media channels, etc.

  • Staffed office hours in the community allowing residents to drop in or communicate virtually  -- in English and Spanish -- with project team members

  • Supported the reformatting of public meetings from lecture-style to interactive display booths allowing project team members and residents to dissect specific components of the project and to discuss individual concerns allowing for greater understanding

Impact

  • Clean-up continues; the City of Wichita approved additional sites for treatment facilities across the project footprint
